Involved in the food industry for over two decades, Read Phillips is the owner of Beets Hospitality Group, the event management and catering company that operates two successful event properties in Pleasanton, CA – The Palm Event Center in the Vineyard and Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery.

 

Phillips received a Culinary Arts degree from the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park in 1979. Armed with an entrepreneurial spirit after graduation, she established Beets Catering, an outside catering company that serviced all of the Bay Area. Phillips and her culinary team soon had customers flocking, and in 1993, Beets Catering became the exclusive food provider to the Shrine Event Center in Livermore, California. There, Phillips and her staff began coordinating and planning events, in addition to creating opulent culinary fare.

 

Eleven years later, Phillips jumped at the chance to open the Palm Event Center in the Vineyard as an upscale event venue in Livermore Valley Wine Country with property developer Mike Callahan. Phillips and the event venue flourished, and by 2006 the venue’s demand was so high, Phillips and Callahan partnered a second time to create a sister property, Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery. Fashioned after a Mediterranean villa and adorned in limestone and mahogany, Casa Real sits literally at the gateway to the Livermore Wine Country on the corner of highway 84 and Vineyard Avenue.

 

In 2009 Phillips and her company rebranded themselves as Beets Hospitality Group to reflect the growth from a small catering company to now a corporation that manages two of the largest and most successful event venues in the East Bay.

 

A strong supporter of the Tri-Valley region and Livermore Valley Wine Country, Phillips is also a leading voice in the business community. She is a past board member for Visit Tri-Valley, the City of Pleasanton Economic Vitality Committee and the Livermore Valley Winegrowers board. Phillips is also a member of the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce, Livermore Chamber of Commerce, and Dublin Chamber of Commerce and is a frequent guest speaker at Catersource conventions.

Melody O'Shea

Melody has been the managing partner of Beets Hospitality since 2010. A seasoned manager with extensive sales and marketing experience, she previously served with U.S. Foods for over 20 years. She has a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Nevada, Reno and is a Registered Dietitian from the University of Minneapolis Minnesota. She also posseses a MBA from Loyola, Chicago. She is a past board member of the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association and Tri-Valley Conservancy. She currently serves on the marketing committee for the Livermore Valley Performing Arts. When not managing the company, Melody can be found at her home in the Livermore hills gardening or bottling O’Shea Corral wine.

George Phillips

George Phillips
Business Manager

George has been involved with Beets Hospitality Group his entire life. As son of the owner, he literally grew up with the company. He has many memories in young adulthood of washing dishes, loading and offloading trucks and managing small events. After college, he also assisted with the opening of Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery. A graduate of Lewis and Clark College with a degree in Biology, he was for many years employed with the non-profit Save Mount Diablo. As Land Conservation Manager, he was charged with overseeing the land tenants, leases and maintaining vendor relations. As Business Manager for Beets and limited partner, he now has turned his attention to assisting the company in its continued growth and development. He has special interest in maintaining a vibrant and dynamic company that attracts and retains talented employees. In his spare time he enjoys traveling and the outdoors; primarily hiking and fly fishing.

Marlene Fahrenkrog

Marlene Fahrenkrog
General Manager

As General Manager for Beets Hospitality Group, it is Marlene's job to ensure all departments work together smoothly and flawlessly to execute events. A true professional, she has lived and breathed hospitality for over twenty-five years. Prior to working at Beets, she was the General Manager for a large East Bay hotel and consistently ranked #1 in the area. She has also been a board member and Chair at Visit Tri-Valley, a destination marketing non-profit for the region. Poised and calm with an incredibly warm disposition, she is a true people person. Her passion lies in interacting with employees and guests. She finds great joy in training and developing staff — as well as getting misty eyed as the father walks a bride down the aisle. When not at Beets, Marlene can be found traveling the globe, dining out, or spending time at home with her husband and daughter.
